In 2023 the University of South Africa is proud to celebrate its sesquicentennial (150 years). To honour this meaningful milestone of the “mother” of all higher education in Southern Africa and beyond, a rose of an unparalleled bright colour is to be named for the momentous occasion. The bright orange is identical to the strongest colour in the flame of the UNISA crest. It symbolises the institutes unique optimism, vibrant inspiration, and the boldness of being an important catalyst for positive change. The firm petalled buds that are cut from medium long stems last well in a vase. It is vigorous, has disease resistant leaves and flowers profusely. The bush remains neat and grows to hip height. Similar to that of the students, one can in awe observe the journey from tight bud developing to a perfectly shaped, half-open bloom that unfolds to ultimately reveal a quartered rosette shape. A rose that shines as brightly as the futures of the students empowered by the higher learning received at UNISA. Proceeds of this rose will assist student funding at UNISA.
