Tribute to Elize Cawood

It is with great sadness that we mourn the death of the acclaimed actress Elize Cawood, who we honour and remember through her exquisite rose, that was named for her three years ago.

We remember when Elize first came to our farm to choose her rose. Being a passionate gardener, she wanted a good garden rose. The delicate beauty of the pearl-white blooms with their soft pink centre, instantly caught her eye and she knew that this was her rose. It is a superb performer, just as she was.

Elize’s career spanned four decades as a stage, film, and television actress, with her most loved role being that of Pop le Roux in the 1980s TV series, Verspeelde Lente. She also took home awards like the Vita Award, Scenaria Award and Artes Award. More recently she appeared in the television series Binnelanders, Isidingo and Erfsonders.

Receiving a rose is one of the highest natural honours that can be bestowed upon a person and in choosing her as one of our rose laureates, we recognised Elize for her great personal achievement and for serving the greater good of all.

The rose, ‘Elize Cawood’ is a strong grower, reaching up to shoulder height. It carries the large, perfectly shaped blooms on elegant, long stems, making it an excellent garden and cutting rose.
