VERGELEGEN – LUDspohardy

Named for one of South Africa’s great historic estates, Vergelegen is a rose of warmth, abundance and timeless beauty. Founded in 1700, Vergelegen – meaning “situated far away” – has evolved over more than three centuries into a remarkable meeting place of Cape heritage, fine wine, horticulture and nature. Its celebrated landscape now encompasses 18 individual gardens, including both the historic Octagonal Garden and dedicated rose gardens. Vergelegen
The Vergelegen rose seems perfectly at home with this heritage. Its large, sumptuous blooms open in a rich golden yellow, with the densely packed centre glowing in deeper shades of apricot, amber and burnished gold. Towards the outside, the petals soften to warm buttery yellow and cream. The changing tones give the flower wonderful depth, particularly in sunlight, when the centre appears almost illuminated from within.
The blooms are very full and generously petalled, opening from shapely buds into large, informal old-fashioned rosettes. Rather than being rigidly symmetrical, the petals fold, quarter and tumble into one another, giving every bloom an individual character and the romantic appearance of an old garden rose.
The plant itself develops into a strong, substantial, upright yet bushy shrub, reaching approximately shoulder height (about 1.2–1.5 m) under normal garden conditions. Its vigorous framework carries the large flowers well while still producing enough branching to create a full garden plant.
Free flowering and possessing excellent stamina, Vergelegen repeats its blooms generously through the season. The substantial flowers are borne on sufficiently sturdy stems to make them particularly rewarding for picking and arranging, while their unusual colouring makes them equally striking when left on the bush.
The foliage is healthy, substantial and deep green, providing a handsome contrast to the luminous flowers and contributing to the rose’s robust garden performance.
There is something particularly appropriate about a rose carrying the Vergelegen name. Roses already form an important part of the estate’s horticultural identity: its formal Rose Garden was renovated in 2015, while the David Austin Rose Garden forms part of the historic Octagonal Garden. Vergelegen
Golden as the late-afternoon Cape sun, richly layered like the history of the estate itself, Vergelegen celebrates more than three centuries of cultivation, beauty and enduring Cape heritage.
Characteristics: Very full old-fashioned/quartered rosette • golden yellow with apricot-gold centre • large blooms • strong upright, bushy growth • approx. 1.2–1.5 m / shoulder height • very free flowering • repeat flowering • excellent stamina • healthy foliage • suitable for cutting and the vase • feature shrub or bedding rose.
I would classify this very comfortably in your Fairytale™ / Stamina™ type of rose, rather than as a conventional Hybrid Tea—the informal, densely petalled rosette is an important part of its appeal.
